Because of the federal government shutdown, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) monthly benefits will be suspended. About 75,000 New Hampshire residents rely on SNAP benefits.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has refused to use a contingency fund set aside by Congress to continue assistance during the shutdown. New Hampshire has NOT joined a coalition of 26 other states suing the federal government to use that contingency. While the N.H. Executive Council is voting on a 2-million-dollar plan to help the NH Food Bank and over 400 affiliated food banks assist SNAP-eligible NH residents, it only amounts to about $26 per month for each eligible person, less the costs of administration and handling by the food banks.
Unless the USDA reverses its decision, your donations of non-perishable packaged food items at church are needed more than ever to help families in Greater Manchester. The donations are collectively delivered to the FIT Food Pantry on Lake Avenue. Remember, Generosity is one of the seven UU Values.
